We had no idea it was going to get that kind of reaction. She played it and I looked up at Kimberly and she was nearly crying.

They were like, “We want to hear it!” Liz was like, “Let’s play it!” I was about to kill her, internally. ” It was such a quick, one-time work tape on the iPhone. … You probably won’t cut it, but if you want to hear it …. HL: Liz was like, “Well, we wrote this song this morning, if you want to hear it. LM: They said, “What have you been writing?” So (Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman of Little Big Town) come over here. HL: I love how you say “through somebody’s face.” It’s just a remarkable thing to witness that when it comes through somebody’s face in that way. Sometimes - we’ve all done this a million times - we think we’re going to write about "A" and by the end of the day, it’s a song about "LMNO." It’s like the song directs you, and that song knew what it wanted to do before we did. She wants to be the girl that’s got the guy she wants. LR: We were trying to catch up with the idea. I think everybody picked something, like you said, that hit a nerve, and to us it was like, “Do we not listen to whole songs anymore?” LM: I think it was really just a day, one day, that we had to deal with that. I think great music, we assign our personal meaning to the song. Well, let’s just confront it head on because the song became controversial. And we didn’t have to think about it at all. It seemed like it was something we were really going to have to think about. Hillary Lindsey: It seemed like it was going to be really difficult to write. She was like, “What do you think it’s going to mean?” And I was like, “I don’t know what it means.” Now my memory is that you weren’t as into it as they were initially, Liz. All I had was “Girl Crush” and (Hillary) sang the first four lines, then she looked at me and said, “You mean like that?” I looked at Liz and she looked at me and we were like, “Yeah, that’s what we meant!” I was sitting at the kitchen table, Liz was making breakfast, and I said, “I want to write a song called ‘Girl Crush.’ ” Then Hillary came in and sat … and she sang the first four lines of the song. So that morning, we woke up and we had a couple hours to write. We write songs from the minute we wake up until the time somebody falls asleep. I live in Boston so I come and we spend three days together here in this house. So we’re at Liz Rose’s house, which is phenomenal. Watch Video: Story Behind the Song: 'Girl Crush'
